When it comes to our nation’s founding, Federal Hall is a building with great historical significance. In that building, George Washington was inaugurated as our first president. It is also the building where Congress first met, and where they drafted the Bill of Rights. But in 1812, the building was demolished. Construction of the United States Custom House was completed on the same location, 30 years later . In 1955, the building was designated as a National Memorial, and is run by the National Parks Service. Federal Hall now serves as a memorial and museum to the historic events that took place there, and the founding of our nation.
Admission and tours of Federal Hall are completely free. There is much for you to learn at the Visitor Information Center, and the Washington Inaugural Gallery. A self-guided tour will take roughly a half an hour, while the ranger-guided tour will take between 45 minutes and an hour.
Federal Hall is open 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday, but closes for Thanksgiving & Christmas, and may also close if the weather is particularly bad.
The building can be found at 26 Wall Street, New York, NY 10005.
