The Brooklyn Botanic Garden

By Josiah Keller · On October 24, 2013

The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is among the most beautiful in the United States, and even the world! Close to a million visitors come each year to see the breathtaking garden, and smell its alluring scents. The Garden has thousands upon thousands of plants, with more than 10,000 different varieties and types!

The Garden has several smaller gardens within it, each with its own theme. The Cranford Rose Garden has a spread of 5,000 rose bushes, of 1,400 varieties! The Shakespeare Garden is an English Cottage Garden containing 80 plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s sonnets, plays, and poems. The Steinhardt Conservatory features tropical and desert plants, such as cacti, orchids, and insect eating plants. The Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a large collection of Cherry Trees, of 42 different Asian Varieties. In the spring, the beauty of 200 blooming cherry trees, with their pink blossoms is simply incredible! While all of the garden is interesting and beautiful, perhaps the most interesting is the Plant Family Collection, which involves nearly a third of the entire garden’s area. The Plant Family Collection has hundreds, thousands, of trees and plants, all grouped together by their family. Seeing everything grouped together in this way is strangely fascinating! But probably the most unique and artistic garden at Brooklyn Botanic, is the Japanese Hill-and-Pond Garden, prominently displaying Japanese plants, laid out amongst three acres, and featuring a pond, waterfall, streams, wooden bridges, and an island.

There is so very much to see and smell at Brooklyn’s fantastic Botanic Garden! Admission is cheap, and free for children and members of the Garden. Directions and hours can be found at BBG.org.

The garden can be found at 1000 Washington Avenue, New York, NY 11238.
