Visit New York City: some basic facts about the city that never sleeps
New York City, or “The Big Apple” as it is fondly called by its residents, is the city with the largest population in the United States. You most likely knew that, but here are some things you may not have known:
- New York Harbor is one of the worlds largest natural harbors
- Over 8,175,133 people call New York City home (2010 Census), and if you count the entire New York City Metropolitan area that number blossoms to over 18.9 million people (over 6,720 square miles)
- New York City is also the most densely populated city in the United States
- About 50 million people visit New York City each year (for both business and tourism)
- The subway system in New York City is one of the most rapid and expansive in the world (468 stations, and 656 miles of track according to some sources)
- New York was originally named New Amsterdam but was renamed by the British
- Central Park is the most visited park in the United States with 25,000,000 visitors each year!
What to see outside New York City
- It’s a bit of a drive, but the Hudson Valley Seed Library, near Accord, NY, is a real treat
- The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown provides a look into baseball history
